Ordering, pricing, payments, changes & cancelations
What is the best way to make an inquiry or place an order?
The very best and most efficient way to get in touch with us is to fill out this form. This will give us all the information we need to answer questions and get your order underway without a lot of back and forth. It is our goal to contact you within 48 hours of receiving your information…hopefully much sooner.
Can I drop in to talk about my order?
A Piece of Cake is a home based business and the City of Norfolk has very strict restrictions about having customers on the premises. For this reason, we are not able to conduct in person consultations at our home. If you are placing a larger order and would like to meet, we are happy to make arrangements.
When should I place my order?
To ensure availability, we recommend ordering your cake as soon as possible. That having been said, if we are not booked up we can take an order up to one week before the event…always ask even if it’s close, we sometimes have openings and cancelations.
What happens if I need to cancel my order?
Please let us know as soon as you can. Click here for details on our cancelation and refund policies.
What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept checks (made payable to “A Piece of Cake”) or cash. You can use a credit card through PayPal but a service charge will be applied.
Why are your products so expensive?
Every item is hand-crafted to order. There is no mass production here. We consider each order not only to be of the highest culinary quality but also a work of art. The pricing reflects not only the cost of materials but the time and attention to detail that goes into each creation.
What is the size of a serving?
A serving is approximately 1” x 4” x 3”.
Do you price match?
We always want to stay competitive and of course want to be the ones to make your special occasion that bit more special. You can always ask!
Do you offer military or other discounts?
Our family is so proud of our firefighter and couldn’t be more appreciative of the sacrifice that all first responders and military make daily. We are pleased to be able to offer a 10% discount for all active military, firefighters, emergency service providers & police. Identification is required at time of order/payment.
Do you have items in stock that I can purchase right away?
No. Every item is made to order.
Can I make changes to my order?
Yes. Major changes should be made no later than 2 weeks before the event (size, flavor, basic design). Minor changes can be made closer to the time. We are happy to work with you as best we can, however if materials have already been purchased or we have already started preparing your cake, changes cannot be made or can only be done so with an extra charge.
Receiving your order
Do you ship?
We can ship all cupcake toppers and figurines. We do not ship cakes, cupcakes or cookies.
Do you deliver?
Yes. There is a fee for delivery. We can deliver anywhere in South Hampton Roads or the Peninsula. If your event is outside of these areas, please contact us directly.
Can I pick up my cake rather than pay for delivery?
Yes and No. For larger cakes that require set-up on site (as is the case for many wedding cakes) that is not an option. Please be aware that if you choose to transport your cake yourself, the order is considered fulfilled and A Piece of Cake is not responsible for any damage that occurs during transport or set-up.
What do I do if my cake is damaged during transport?
If you elect to pick up your cake, we cannot be responsible for any damage that occurs. However, you should definitely call us and we will do everything we can to help fix the problem. If we are transporting the cake, it is fully our responsibility.
What if I don’t see a picture of the cake design I’d like on your website?
We love working with you to create a brand new, one-of-a-kind design. Your imagination (or ours) is the limit!
What do I do if I can’t find a picture to show you of what I’d like?
It’s always helpful to look online and find pictures of designs you like but ultimately, we will be creating something new for you and that can be achieved with or without photos…sometimes a picture of a favorite toy, a copy of the invitation, a piece of fabric, the decorations and countless other items can be the impetus for a great custom design
The Menu, Cake Flavors & Allergies
Do you offer cake tastings?
Yes and No. We are not able to host customers on the premises because we are a home based business and must abide by the regulations of the City of Norfolk. If you would like to sample some flavors, a ‘take-out’ sampling can be prepared for you for $50. This amount will be deducted from your final total if you decide to place the order with us.
Your cakes are beautiful but I’ve had similar cakes before and they didn’t taste good at all. Is that true of your cakes?
No, no and no!!! Honestly it doesn’t matter to us at all what the cake looks like if it doesn’t taste good. Our cakes taste as good as they look AND look as good as they taste.
I don’t see the flavor of cake/filling/frosting I’d like on your menu. Do you make custom flavors?
Yes, within reason. It’s always good to ask.
Can I choose more than one flavor of cake and/or frosting/filling for my order?
Yes. For tiered cakes, each tier can be different. It is even possible to make a single tier with a different flavor on each side or a layer of two flavors. Additional costs may apply.
I have tasted fondant and I don’t like it. What are my alternatives?
The fondant that most people have tasted and do not like is the prepackaged variety available in stores. We make our fondant from scratch from marshmallows, powdered sugar and a few other ingredients. It is delicious! It will be vanilla unless otherwise specified but can be flavored differently (chocolate, almond, lemon and more). That having been said, fondant is used primarily for aesthetic rather than for flavor. You cannot achieve the modern, sleek look of fondant with buttercream nor can you get the intricate decorations and details that are characteristic of many cake designs. Please know that, unlike many bakers/decorators, we frost our cakes with a generous layer of buttercream before covering with fondant. So, if you or your guests don’t care for our fondant, you can enjoy the decoration, eat a delicious piece of buttercream cake and leave the fondant behind on the plate.
Do you make gluten, dairy or sugar free products?
Unfortunately no. There are several bakeries in the area that have worked very hard to fine tune their skills to accommodate these needs and do it very well. It is not something in which we specialize.
Can you cater to severe nut allergies?
No. We can definitely ensure that no nuts are added as ingredients to the order but to be on the safe side, we cannot guarantee there would be no cross contamination as we bake with nuts all the time.
